The Tennessee Valley Authority announced last week that current executive Don Moul would be stepping up as CEO of the company, replacing Jeff Lyash who announced plans to retire earlier this year.
In March, Tennessee Republican Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty criticized TVA’s leadership and recommended that interim leadership be selected that would be “trusted by the president” before they opt to choose a long-term replacement.
They also pushed against promoting from within because doing so would prevent TVA from finding a “top-quality leader” outside of the company.
The increased interest in TVA’s leadership comes as the utility works towards progress with building a nuclear power plant. Blackburn and Hagerty, however, question the ability of TVA to actually make substantial progress, saying, “TVA and its leadership can’t carry the weight of this moment.”
TVA Board members are appointed by the president and are confirmed by the Senate. Last week, President Donald Trump fired Michelle Moore from the Board without announcing his reason. Moore was appointed by former President Joe Biden.
In his previous term, President Trump also came down on TVA, firing the former Board Chairman and another board member.
Lyash offered his support for the new CEO, saying “Don is the right choice to lead TVA forward as we work to build an energy system to power the next generation of American jobs. Don is ready to be the hand guiding TVA in a time of rapid change and growth, and he will continue to propel TVA’s nuclear leadership. In his role as COO, he has led the development of next generation nuclear technologies and has a deep knowledge and appreciation for nuclear power – the most reliable power the world’s ever known.”
Moul was previously appointed by Governor Bill Lee to serve on the Tennessee Nuclear Energy Advisory Council focused on nuclear innovation and driving continued investment to create a nuclear energy ecosystem for the future of Tennessee.
