This is all very cursory right now, but what we know at the moment – the Indians have named this Operation Sindoor and as of right now hit nine sites in Pakistan in retaliation for the slaughter in Pahalgam.
The Indian armed forces have confirmed it targeted nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir as part of “Operation Sindoor”.
A statement from the Indian armed forces reads:
A little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘OPERATION SINDOOR’, hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.
Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted.
It said its actions have been “focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature” and that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted, adding:
India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.
‘Sindoor’ has a deep meaning for the Indians.
…Sindoor is the Hindi word for vermillion — which married Hindu women often apply to their forehead. The operation’s name appears to be a reference to the manner in which gunmen shot dead 26 people — almost all tourists — in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22.
The attack triggered the spiralling tensions between India and Pakistan that led to Wednesday morning’s strikes.
Multiple survivor accounts have detailed how the gunmen segregated male tourists from the women, and then pointedly identified those who were non-Muslim before shooting them dead — leaving many married Hindu women widowed.
This is what video we have so far.

The Indian Ministry of Defense released this statement claiming their armed forces had carried out targeted strikes at ‘terrorist camps’ where attacks such as the one weeks ago in Pahalgam had been ‘planned and directed.’

Good luck convincing the Pakistanis of that.

I expect they’ll have something to say more than what they’ve already put out, which is ominous enough in itself.
…Dawn newspaper cites [LtGenSharif Achmed] Chaudhry as saying:
Let me say it unequivocally: Pakistan will respond to this at a time and place of its own choosing. This heinous provocation will not go unanswered.
Very worrying news.

Yeah – that’s the rub with this – the nuclear aspect of it.
The abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty and the situation post-massacre already had things moving to an escalation.
For the first time since 1960, India cuts off water from the Baglihar Dam, breaching the Indus Waters Treaty. Next up: the Kishanganga Dam. Pakistan sees this as an act of aggression.

But now a refugee crisis of epic proportions could be the least of anyone’s worries if cooler heads don’t prevail quickly.
