Should James Comey go to jail for implicitly threatening the life of the President of the United States?
As much as I despise Comey, who is a self-important, arrogant, and power-abusing ass with social skills as tiny as his frame is large, I have to be honest and say that I don’t think he belongs in jail for posting a photo on Instagram.
That’s not to say that he doesn’t belong in jail for a whole host of other reasons. He does. He abused his power as FBI Director to overturn an election, leaked classified information, and pushed a hoax that led to years of impeachment talk. His FBI lied to the FISA court, and I am pretty sure we could get him for jaywalking if we wanted to.
There is, however, a movement to toss Comey in jail and throw the book at him.
The kerfuffle started with Comey slyly posting a photograph on Instagram suggesting that Donald Trump be removed from office. “86 47” is clearly a reference to throwing Trump in the trash, and the most common interpretation of 86ing somebody is, in modern parlance, killing them. John wrote about the controversy yesterday, and since then it has blown up even bigger.

No doubt James Comey is aware of that. A man who can find the Latin Mass to be coded white supremacism that leads to terrorism has extraordinarily sensitive hearing when it comes to threats–so clear that he hears them when they obviously don’t exist.

Comey is selling a book, and this is his way of generating interest. Nothing sells like excess and controversy, and since the man is tossing his second-rate mystery writing out into the roiling waters of publicity at a time when every Tom, Dick, and Harry in the media is dumping the deets on Biden’s incapacity, he needed to take it up a notch to get attention.

Shells appear to be Comey’s preferred method of communication. It guess the beach is his dead drop or something, and he always tries to distance himself from whatever he photographs. Plausible deniability? If that is his goal, he doesn’t know what is plausible or not to the average person.

But as satisfying as it would be to see Comey perp-walked, it would be a horrible mistake. The Left is trying to bait Trump into fulfilling thier ridiculosu “fascism” narrative, and I doubt their are legions of whack-job Comey followers who actually ARE inclined to take a potshot at Donald Trump.

Chances are that the real whack jobs who are inclined to carry out an assassination–of which there are many–aren’t following James Comey or Gretchen Whitmer, and while their rhetoric is abhorrent, its audience is Trumpworld and its goal is to make people like Comey and other top Democrats appear to be martyrs.

Remember what happened when Trump suffered martyrdom? It didn’t work out well for the Democrats to persecute him, and while the people doing this are walking up to the line and perhaps crossing it by a little bit, going after them would be stupid, at least politically. Are we going to throw all the many, many celebrities who have explicitly called for Trump to be killed in jail?
If so, it would be a mistake. A satisfying one to make, surely, as they would be getting the same treatment they put Trump through, but a mistake nonetheless.
They need to be diminished. Embarrassed. Ignored by people who are spending their time making the country better.
Two possibilities.
