Dear Editor
On Tuesday I went from Preston, Lancashire, to London Euston and back on Avanti West Coast trains. Because of engineering works my journey time, usually a reasonable two hours 11 mins, was extended by an hour each way. Nevertheless my standard class fare, with my old person’s railcard which gives 33 per cent discount, was £246. Because I returned on an earlier train than the one I had booked, I was surcharged £5.25. The standard section of the train was very busy, so I decided to round off the day by upgrading to a Premium Standard seat for an extra £32.50 (more leg room but the non-adjustable seats are so reclined that it is almost like lying down and not at all comfortable), taking my day trip fare to £283.75.
My daughter-in-law recently flew to Prague and back for £48, and my newspaper is advertising a Caribbean cruise for £99 a night.
Can anyone explain this?
