Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

IT WAS reported on Tuesday that that Mr Miliband is to order another large-scale nuclear power station, this time at Sizewell.

Based on the experience with Hinkley Point C, the 3.2GW Sizewell C nuclear power station might come onstream by 2042. Sadly, around 40GW of ageing nuclear and gas-fired power stations are due to retire by the early 30s, so Sizewell C will be too little, too late.

SMRs (Small Modular nuclear Reactors) made by Rolls-Royce could have been operational by 2030 at a lower cost per GW, creating British jobs and possible exports.

So we must ask why Mr Miliband continues to neglect British SMRs, while increasing dependence on the likes of China.
