Friday’s Final Word | by Ed Morrissey – HotAir

Everybody’s tabbing for the weekend

Ed: That’s even better than the perennial “Happy Birthday to a future president” tweet about Hillary Clinton. It seems like a lot longer than just one year ago since the debate, though, given how much has changed — for the better.

“Even I was shocked” by Biden’s onstage performance that day, Representative Tim Burchett (R., Tenn.) told National Review on Thursday.

One year later, Biden has not receded from the spotlight as much as congressional Democrats had hoped. A new book released last month, Original Sin, revealed new details about the lengths to which Biden’s inner circle went to conceal his decline from the public (without adequately addressing the role the media played in the cover-up). And the administration’s recent release of special counsel Robert Hur’s hours-long interviews with Biden over his mishandling of classified documents has lent credence to Republicans’ years-long claims that Biden was cognitively unfit for office, let alone a second term. What’s more, House Oversight Chairman James Comer has pledged to continue investigating the 46th president’s use of the autopen while in office.

Ed: Yes, we still have unfinished business with the Biden years.

Ed: It’s certainly good news for Trump. More importantly, it’s good news for representative constitutional democracy, and bad news for star chambers and judicial tyrants.

A prominent Wall Street economist who had slammed President Trump’s tariffs earlier this year now says that the president may have “outsmarted all of us” with his controversial trade policies.

Torsten Sløk, chief economist at investment giant Apollo Global Management, said that while the uncertainty surrounding trade policy has already started to weigh on the economy, Trump could lower tariffs on most of the US trading partners while using the levies to boost federal revenue.

Sløk suggested in a recently posted analysis that the administration’s approach may be more strategic than previously thought.

Ed: I’m not necessarily a big fan of tariffs, but how could smart people not think that Trump might have a larger plan playing out? We’ve tried the free trade/no penalties policy for three decades, at least, and our trading partners kept taking advantage of us. We are the most lucrative market in the world, so it’s at least worth seeing if we can force better behavior by making people pay for those transgressions. Speaking of which …

We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country. They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Ed: Canada has had some onerous tariffs on American goods for decades, particularly in the dairy/ag sector.

The U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities Saturday have left American voters with contradictory feelings, a new poll finds:

A majority favored limited strikes, but nearly as many said they were worried about a widening war and Iran retaliating on U.S. soil.

Meanwhile, most viewed the U.S. attacks as a success — and are likely to back similar military action as a result.

Ed: Very few people oppose success and victory. Most of those who do are called … Democrats.

Why would the so-called “Supreme Leader,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war torn Country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the War with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie, it is not so. As a man of great faith, he is not supposed to lie. His Country was decimated, his three evil Nuclear Sites were OBLITERATED, and I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces, by far the Greatest and Most Powerful in the World, terminate his life. I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, “THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!” In fact, in the final act of the War, I demanded that Israel bring back a very large group of planes, which were heading directly to Tehran, looking for a big day, perhaps the final knockout! Tremendous damage would have ensued, and many Iranians would have been killed. It was going to be the biggest attack of the War, by far. During the last few days, I was working on the possible removal of sanctions, and other things, which would have given a much better chance to Iran at a full, fast, and complete recovery – The sanctions are BITING! But no, instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more. Iran has to get back into the World Order flow, or things will only get worse for them. They are always so angry, hostile, and unhappy, and look at what it has gotten them – A burned out, blown up Country, with no future, a decimated Military, a horrible Economy, and DEATH all around them. They have no hope, and it will only get worse! I wish the leadership of Iran would realize that you often get more with HONEY than you do with VINEGAR. PEACE!!!

Ed: Maximum pressure works. Let’s keep it up until the populace finally decides to eject this regime and take back their country.

Justices circulate Memos among with their legal views on certain cases in order to bring others around to their thinking.

Given what she has written in her dissent, imagine the memos that Jackson must have sent around in this case.

Barrett aptly boils it down to a single point — Jackson would elevate the primacy of single district judges about the Executive because they are “the court” in the separation of powers.

Ed: Duane and I were marveling over this during our Week in Review podcast as well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this sharp an attack on a colleague in a majority opinion. KBJ is not exactly endearing herself to the other justices, including the Chief Justice, who must have green-lighted that language. I do note that none of the concurrences really disavow those sentiments about KBJ. And maybe this is why …

The University of Virginia’s president, James E. Ryan, has told the board overseeing the school that he will resign in the face of demands by the Trump administration that he step aside in order to help resolve a Justice Department inquiry into the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, according to three people briefed on the matter.

For the leader of a major public university to take such an extraordinary step demonstrates President Trump’s success in harnessing the investigative powers of the federal government to accomplish his administration’s policy goals.

Ed: Not to mention the flow of funds to Academia. Is Harvard paying attention yet?

===

Ed: I mean, SOME of these are good, but for the most part, this is what Hollywood celebrates about itself rather than actual quality. At least it didn’t include “The Shape of Water.”
