On Tuesday, April 15, the Senate passed SB0519 which would require that foreign purchases of Tennessee land be reported to the Commissioner of Agriculture, with failure to report resulting in a civil penalty of up to 25% of the property’s value.

The legislation stipulates that in addition to filing a report of a purchase with the United States Department of Agriculture, under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978, that “foreign persons”, including businesses and individuals, purchasing land in the state must also file with the Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture within 90 days of acquisition or transfer.

On the Senate floor, the bill was introduced by its sponsor Kerry Roberts (R-Springfield-District 23) and conformed to the House companion, HB0219.

There was no discussion on the bill and the body moved immediately to a vote without objection, unanimously passing the bill 30-0.

As the legislation also passed the full House 91-5 at the end of March, it will now go to Governor Lee for his signature.
