CNN, rightly, took a lot of flak for seemingly promoting the crowdsourcing app called ICEBLOCK, with which anti-ICE/pro-illegals activists warned illegal aliens about the location of ICE enforcement officers.
Unlike many of my conservative friends, I thought that CNN’s reporting did not cross the line–it was news that anti-ICE activists were helping criminals evade law enforcement, but I agreed that the tone of the reporting suggested that this was just normal, in the way that “mostly peaceful” riots are.

Incredibly sick. CNN reporter @claresduffy did a puff piece with the developer of an app that allows users to track ICE agents in real time. CNN is now providing free advertising for an app that aims to get ICE agents hurt and/or killed in the line of duty.

But a funny thing happened–one that I doubt that CNN or others anticipated after the virtual advertisement CNN did for the app: pro-ICE activists found a way to use the crowdfunding app to clear their neighborhoods and various locations elsewhere of illegal aliens: they started reporting ICE activity at the sort of places where illegal aliens like to hang out.

2) Enter all addresses of Mexican Restaurants.
3) Enter all addresses of Plumbing and Electrical contractors.

5) Sit back – drink some “ice” tea – and watch the fun.
At the very least, this renders the app pretty useless for its intended purpose–how does one know if the report is about real ICE activity or a fake? At the other end of the spectrum, it accomplishes the goal of clearing the streets of illegal aliens by making them worry that ICE agents are in the area.
The real problem the app caused was not really the warning it gave to illegal aliens–over time, the constant worry that ICE is where you want to go will incentivize self-deporting, which is actually superior in many ways to having to pick up illegal aliens and spend a lot of time and money going through the deportation process.
No–it’s the increasing threats to ICE agents, who have faced actual violence and harassment from radicals.

The Pravda Media and the left (but I repeat myself) are promoting an environment of hate aimed at law enforcement in general and ICE in particular, and advertising where ICE agents are, promotes flash mobs of violent activists by pointing to where the agents are at any one time.

By rendering the app nearly useless, the people reporting fake ICE sightings aren’t just striking back, but also protecting ICE agents.
