With the Governor’s signing of House Joint Resolution 51 (HJR0051), July has officially been designated as a month of prayer and fasting for those “physically able and spiritually inclined” in the Volunteer State.

Sponsored by Rep. Monty Fritts (R-Kingsport-District 32) and Sen. Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17) this past legislative session, the resolution seeks “Almighty God’s hand of ever-present mercy and healing on Tennessee” as lawmakers and citizens alike acknowledge their “sins and shortcomings, both individually and as a people, and humbly ask for His forgiveness”.

Thanks to the organization Pray4TN, events are scheduled in all 95 counties over the next month where community members will unite at their county or city courthouses for “Sacred Assemblies” with times of worship, prayer, and repentance to, “awaken our hunger for and need of God, humbling ourselves before Him, asking His forgiveness, and seeking His blessings, grace, and mercy so that we, our communities, our State, and our nation will be transformed.”

The list of gathering dates and times is posted on the Pray4TN website and Facebook page and the month is anticipated to culminate in a final statewide gathering on Saturday, August 2 in Nashville.

Pray4TN has also published a prayer guide with tips and topics for those seeking advice on how to pray for the state throughout the month and has a resource page containing additional documents like a letter from Fritts and Pody, fliers for promoting the events, and additional scriptural/prayer readings.

This year’s resolution made the July designation permanent, ensuring Tennesseans will recognize the importance of asking “the Holy Spirit to move within the halls of government, our classrooms, our businesses, our places of worship, and our homes, bringing peace, hope, love, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, temperance, forbearance, and joy,” each year.
