Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Today many readers living in the shires will have elections for their county councils. These were last held in 2021, at the height of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s popularity.  If there are elections where you live, hopefully there will be someone worth electing to represent you.  If you are unsure you can check using the Who Can I Vote For? website.

While we are expecting a significant number of Tory losses and Reform first-time victories, the Lib Dems and Independents could also do well. This may lead to a number of councils having no overall control. In this case parties with enough councillors will need to form coalitions. Once the results are known it will be interesting to see who works with whom and whether Reform have any friends. Where Reform do have power it will be even more interesting to see how they perform in office.

If your county council elections have been postponed you may have a mayoral election next year with more local elections later. Who wins these elections does matter. Devolution has been pitched as giving local areas more control; that is an opportunity that could work for us if we get involved. It may seem a long way away but if you want something to happen there’s no time like the present to start finding like-minded people who want to make a difference.
