Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

Have you noticed how hysterical the world has become? Is everything life-changing? Will this letter shatter your beliefs and threaten your very existence?

The bonkers over-reaction to covid seems to have set a precedent: a mild outbreak of, say, food-poisoning is announced in similar fashion to an epidemic of Black Death proportions. Cigarettes, someone lighting a fag, requires a square mile exclusion zone.

For centuries the mad zealot wandered the streets with his placard telling us the end of the world in nigh. Now we have thousands of evangelists telling us we are all going to burn in a hell on earth or something similar, if we don’t join the fanatic, incomprehensible mission to save the planet! Unfortunately, I do not have a private jet to attend their conferences, so I cannot properly assist them in their ludicrous endeavours.

But it is not just the environment: everything is the absolute worst or is labelled as some ridiculous extreme. Nigel Farage is labelled a fascist. What? In what possible way is Nigel comparable with our friend Adolf? How has poor old Nigel become a totalitarian monster? What race does he intend to eradicate? Where does he keep his huge army of sub-human stormtroopers? The whole thing is absurd.

Donald Trump is a tyrannical despot bringing democracy to an end! I don’t think so; he might be a bit on the bullish side, but he has hardly torn up the American Constitution and declared martial law across the 50 states. Yet judging by the press he is closest thing to a nuclear holocaust that we have ever encountered.

Brexit was cataclysmic, the Conservatives destroyed the country – I didn’t really notice, what is wrong with me? We need to save the NHS, we need to save the BBC, we need to save our not very democratic democracy. Does everything need saving? Or could we just say goodbye to a few things that don’t work that well?

This Government is the worst ever! Actually, that might be true, but it does not fit my argument, so I’ll let that one go.

But you can be assured another devasting disaster is on its way, the biggest catastrophe since the one we had last week. Calamity has become the new normal.
