Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

I see that the previously convicted burglar and rapist Ryland Headley has now been found guilty of the 1967 murder of an elderly widow, following a trial at Bristol Crown Court.

When, in 1978,  the then 45-year-old Headley pleaded guilty to two rapes of elderly women, he asked for ten burglaries to be taken into account. He was jailed for life, but after he had been inside for just one year, his lawyers successfully argued this should be reduced to seven years.

Apparently, doctors examined Headley in prison and concluded that he was ‘not a criminal psychopath’ and blamed his rapes on an ‘unhappy marriage to an ambitious and demanding wife’. It simply beggars belief how they could get away with such a flimsy and disingenuous excuse for the violent raping of helpless, elderly women.

Clearly, since that was close to half century ago, there is nothing new about this two-tier justice system based on ethnicity: it seems to be as old as immigration itself. Ryland was one of the much-venerated ‘Windrush Generation’, arriving here on a boat from the West Indies in 1955.

Interestingly, no photographs of Headley were published during this latest, and presumably final, trial was in progress, only courtroom sketches. I imagine this is defended on the ‘innocent until proven guilty’ mantra. In contrast, Amanda Clare, a white Reform UK councillor who faces vague ‘criminal damage’ charges in relation to a Pride ‘event’ and who is equally innocent until proven guilty, has her full-colour photographic portrait plastered on the front page.
