It is being attributed to brain injuries suffered during their service. The assumption is there could be no contemporaneous cause, because that would require some sort of threat actor who felt threatened by men of ability, intelligence, and determination, which was acting preemptively to quash their abilities to succeed in life, and that actor would have to be aware of them and focused on finding such men to assault them with something which would not be easily detectable.
I would assume in most cases, the Stasi would picture these guys running for office and seeing what is going on in DC, or making millions and entering high society, and conclude they cannot be allowed near power at any cost.
