A House Joint Resolution urging Congress to pass the Fair Tax Act has been referred to the full Senate for a vote.

House Joint Resolution 0017 (HJR0017) was presented by Senator Jack Johnson (R-Franklin-District 27) on Tuesday to the Senate Finance, Ways, and Means Committee. The committee recommended the resolution for concurrence with a vote of 8 ayes and 1 nay.

The only opposition to the resolution was raised by Senator Jeff Yarbro (D-Nashville-District 21), who questioned the impact of adding a substantial federal sales tax on top of state sales tax.

The resolution, sponsored by State Representative Jake McCalmon (R-Franklin-District 63) mirrors much of the language in the Fair Tax Act (H.R. 25), namely calling for the abolition of the federal income tax and the institution of a national sales tax instead.

The HJR critiques much of the current tax system and denounces federal payroll taxes, including those on social security, Medicare payroll, and self-employment and supports the repealing of the 16th Amendment, all consistent with H.R. 25’s aim of promoting, “freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity.”

The HJR has not yet been scheduled on the calendar of the full Senate.

If the full Senate passes the resolution, a copy will be forwarded to President Trump and each member of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation.
