As President Trump and his administration work to “detect overpayments and fraud” in federal benefits programs, the state is preparing to provide data needed to maintain program integrity.

In May, the Trump administration requested information from all 50 states with recipient identification and aid amounts given through the Supplemental Nutritional Aid Program, also known as SNAP. They requested the information for the last five years in order to verify “the eligibility of benefit recipients.”
According to TN Department of Human Services spokesperson Danielle Cotton, “Tennessee has received the requests and is prepared to comply within the law.”

Data from DHS shows that over 687,000 Tennessee residents have received SNAP benefits as of April.
While some states have stated that they will not provide the information, which has typically been held by state entities, Tennessee has noted that they will provide the requested information.

However, Trump’s administration has now stated that states may work on compiling the data but they should not submit the information until “requisite procedures safeguards have been met.”
